Cali is a French Bulldog, and she belongs to the person who runs this atelier. She is the reason there is an atelier at all.

The photograph her portrait was made from is not a good photograph. It was taken indoors, one-handed, against a plain wall, on a phone, with no setup of any kind — the sort of picture everybody already has forty of and nobody thinks twice about. That is the whole point of it. Every commission the house has taken since has begun with a picture of exactly that standard, because that is the standard the work is built to survive.

The archetype

She was given the court manner and the title that goes with it: The Queen. It is not a joke at her expense. A French Bulldog's face is mostly forehead and eyes, and the court portrait is a form that was invented to make a great deal out of a forehead and a pair of eyes — the frontal pose, the dark ground, the single light from the left, the collar doing the work a crown would be too obvious to do. Put that face in that frame and the result is not a dog dressed up. It is a dog taken seriously.

There was no argument about it. Later sittings would produce two or three finished portraits before one won; this one had nothing to beat, because there was no house style yet for it to be measured against. It made the house style instead.
